Note from the scribes

We would like to apologise for the lateness of the last few, including this one, TRipes.  As most of you know, Jennie’s son, Chris, and his wife, Yo, and their baby, Isabella, have been staying with us.  That in itself wasn’t a problem but access to the computer, which is kept in the guest bedroom, was.  They’ve now moved out so we will be able to do July’s early.  However, be warned, son number 1, Tom, and his wife, Aew, are coming back to the UK to live on the 27th July and will stay in the guest room for a few weeks while they get themselves sorted out. However, as they don’t have a baby, it shouldn’t be so much of a problem.  Fingers crossed anyway!

Meeting notes

Have to say that this will probably be the shortest TRipe we’ve done.  I have a scant page of notes with some items having been covered already in May’s TRipe.  However, please enjoy what there is - and send us some articles yourselves PLEASE.

Get Well Soon

Sadly, Martin Ward broke his tendon moving his caravan (he says) so is in plaster up to his neck for several weeks.  Jenny was “on his case” but I think she’s fighting a losing battle there but keep on at him Jen!  Anyway, he was celebrating his “passenger” status by drinking a very nice pint of beer - making the rest of us drivers green with envy.

Tour of Leicester

As you saw on the front of last month’s TRipe, the tour of Leicester was something of a damp squid weather-wise but was definitely not so enjoyment-wise.  We LTRGers know how to make the best of anything J

Other trips

Laon - Tim & Kathryn had a fabulous time and sent us a wonderful report which was included in May’s TRipe.

Derby Dales Weekend - apparently this was an excellent weekend.  Terry and Sue Pruce, Roger Guy, and Reg and Irene Bowler went along.  They said it was very well organised and great fun.

Derbyshire weekend - this was an absolutely excellent weekend but I won’t steal anyone’s thunder by reporting properly on it here.  Hopefully, someone will have written a report for the July TRipe and will send me lots of photos, and I do have a few of my own.

Summer car events

Now we’re back into the good weather - if the British summer behaves itself that is (although, fingers crossed, it’s certainly doing so at the moment) - there are some monthly car events to go to.

Firstly, there’s the monthly Ashby Folville.  This is always on the second Tuesday of the month.  If you get a chance to go, then take our advice - get there as early as you possibly can whatever the weather.

Andy and Jennie went this month.  As the weather was gorgeous it seemed everyone and his wife also went.  This meant they had to abandon their TR6, along with Andrew Deacon’s (whose daughter, Elizabeth accompanied him) half way between Ashby Folville and the previous village (can’t remember its name).  It was worth it.  The main field was chock full of really interesting vehicles.  They’ve also opened up another field on the other side of the road which mainly had Euroboxes just parked in it, but there were several interesting cars in there too.

The oldest cars always park at the back of the pub but I did notice they were down in number this year compared to last.

The bikes - of which there seem to be hundreds - were all over the sides of the road, in front of the pub, and up the side road next to the pub.

It was somewhat of a challenge if you wanted to use the loos up at the pub.  You either had to fight your way through the throng at the bar or fight through the throng round the side of the pub looking at the cars and bikes.  Then you had to stand in a long queue; even the men were queuing at one time.  There were some loos on the field which weren’t so nice and you still had to queue.  We have managed to crack not having a drink by taking our own along but we’ve not yet come up with a cure for needing the facilities.  All ideas considered!

The other venue is the Dog & Gun at Kilby.  That was last night, Wednesday 12th July and I know that Andrew and Corinne Burford went in their American delight because I followed them there on my way home from work J  Andy also popped along for a look-see while I did some gardening.  I expect someone will know if this is a one-off or if it’s a monthly thing - watch this space in July’s TRipe (which we promise to get out early).

New venue for meeting

Although the pub in Tilton is fine, the meals often aren’t really up to scratch and the car park is really rough.  So we’re looking for another venue.  No rush - we’re OK where we are for now - but a couple of other pubs were put up for consideration:

Dog & Gun, Kilby - this pub doesn’t have a separate room but they don’t serve meals on a Monday so we could use their restaurant and they could serve bar snack type meals for us.  This would mean, of course, that we’d have to change our meeting night.  This went down like a lead balloon as everyone is very happy with the third Thursday of every month.  Besides, Phil is learning to swim on a Monday!

Black Horse, Houghton-on-the-Hill - this pub has an excellent car park, good food and a separate room.  It was agreed that as many of us as could, and who wanted to, would pop along on Thursday 22nd June at 8.30pm to try it out ready to report at July’s meeting.

Cooks Tour (?!)

Actually, this isn’t what it sounds - it’s the tour round Cooks of Wigston’s wonderful car museum at Saddington.  Martin Ward was offered 18-20th July but as they were in the same week as the International and just after Classic Le Mans, it was decided they weren’t very good for us.  He was going to get some more to discuss at the July meeting.

Morgan trip

Andy has managed to secure a trip round the Morgan factory.  He’s been badgering them for around 6 years now - ever since our first year at Malvern for the International - and has been fobbed off for one reason or another.  Anyway, they’ve now relented.  The trip takes place on Friday 21st July, starting at 10.30am sharp.  It takes around 2½ hours.  The cost is £75 for the whole tour so the individual cost will be that figure divided by the number of people on the tour (with a maximum of 30).  The factory closes at 1.30pm on a Friday and this is non-negotiable as it’s been that way for years.  Please do let us know if you’d like to go - it’s on a first-come-first-served basis but the places aren’t going anywhere nearly as fast as we thought they would, probably because of the ridiculously early start we’ll all have to make in order to get to Morgan for 10.30.

International

Well now, where on earth do I start.  As ever, there was much discussion and hilarity and comment flying all over the place.  However, I do recall - and I’m sure I was right, or was that lemonade of mine seriously spiked ? - that Paul said he was taking a sheep down there with him in his passenger seat, duly safety-belted in.

Very interesting.  I didn’t realise he had Welsh blood in him.

He did try to backtrack a little and insist it was for our dinner on the Saturday night - but you know what they say about stopping digging

BBQ at Chez Skinner

We’ve all been invited to Colin and Ann Skinner’s for a 2-course BBQ on Saturday 6th August.  They will provide all the food so there will be a small charge of £6 per person - which is required up-front.  A count-up at the meeting suggested that around 15 people intended to go.  They said they can house a maximum of 40 people so there’s plenty of room for others who didn’t put their hands up at June’s meeting.  Colin and Ann live in a small village called Badby near Wellingborough so it will be a good run out as well.  Please let them know if you’re interested, skinner.badby@btinternet.com

Future events

Lakes - Has anyone taken this over yet?  Is anyone interested in it?  If we don’t hear anything by the time we send out the July TRipe, we’ll take it out .  Friday 8th to Sunday 10th September.  Change of arrangements unfortunately, Jennie & Andy are NOT now going on this weekend because of family commitments.  So would one of those of you who’d said you’d like to go please take over the organisation.  Nothing has been booked so far.  If you’re interested in going on this weekend, please email Jennie & Andy who will then pass your details on to whoever agrees to take over the organisation.

Goodwood Revival Weekend  - 1st - 3rd September,.  Graham Ransome organising.  Please email him if you want accommodation, please email Grahm Ransome.  Tim Sharpe also has some details on this weekend.

While I was tidying up!...

Part five

Are you ready for this?  I have in my hot little hands Issue Number 1 of TR Action, dated 1st March 1970.  It records the formation of the TR Register on 11th January 1970.

And I quote:

Where did the TRs come from?

From Morgan, Jaguar and MG actually .. !  Triumph had, for some time, coveted the Morgan Plus 4 design and the Jag and MG sports car sales to America and wanted to get in on the act.  They produced the 2 litre SR for the 1952 Earls Court Motor Show but this was obviously a rush job and due for improvement.  The improvements came the following year thanks to Ken Richardson and the 90bhp TR2 was born.  Not only born, but it took first, second and fifth places in the 1954 RAC Rally.  Modifications, such as increase in engine power to 100bhp in 1956, larger carburettors in the same year, the addition of disc brakes and the body refinements of the 3A coming in 1958 have all added up to make the car that we know today.”

And in the year 2006, we are still modifying and increasing bhp to our own personal standards.  And long may it continue!

Club teeshirts

Lots of people gave Paul their orders for teeshirts and hats so that he had a fighting chance to get them for us to wear at the International.  If he’s not given them to Baaarbara and her mates, that is!

The embroidered logo is on the left breast and on the right sleeve on the man’s shirt, the man’s teeshirt , and the ladies’ blouse.  The logo is on the sleeve only on the ladies’ teeshirt.  It’s on the front of the cap.

The costs are as follows, including £1 towards club funds for each item:

man’s shirt                                   21.00

ladies’ blouse                               20.00

man’s teeshirt                              13.00

ladies’ teeshirt                              11.00

cap                                                 7.00

PART 59 - Heather

I’VE SOME GOOD EXCUSES

for not having written for a while.  Lots to tell you about but not enough time to sit and put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

Some friends of a neighbour expressed an interest in our house and came to look around before we’d spoken to an estate agent, or I’d had time to tidy up.  To cut a long story short, two agents valued the house, we increased it a bit and told the interested people, they negotiated down to the value advised by the agent and we shook hands on it.  Great.  Then the bad news:  we had to be out by the end of June so the search began for rental accommodation.  There aren’t many landlords willing to let for just 4 months but, after two let-downs, we found a small first-floor apartment just a couple of miles away.

We invited our buyers round for dinner one Tuesday evening to celebrate and during the meal received a telephone call informing us that Catherine, Peter’s sister-in-law, had been diagnosed with liver cancer.  Peter flew out to support his brother on Thursday while I stayed at home and entertained Fabienne, the Belgian manager of Peter’s Parisian plant.  (Are you confused yet?)

Peter returned to the US after the weekend and I travelled to the UK the following week.  Catherine died the day after my arrival, just 16 days after her diagnosis.  Peter flew to the UK again and we did our best to assist John who was, of course, very distraught.

So those are my reasons for not having written in April and May.

June was chaotic to say the least.  We had planned to go on an Alaskan cruise but cancelled it when we realised how crazy life was getting.  The second weekend of the month we had a “tag sale”.  This is like a car boot sale but you do it on your own driveway.  We had several large ticket items to get rid of including a sectional sofa, a Mosquito Magnet and snowblower.  As the weekend was drawing to an end and we still had the first two of these items sat on the drive, I went indoors to advertise them in the local newspaper and on Ebay.  When I came back outside Peter was counting the money he’d just taken for them!  Back inside to cancel the adverts and auctions.

The third weekend of the month we had the immediate neighbours come round for a dinner party.  The weather was warm and during the afternoon it stopped raining so we carried our dining room furniture outside to the gazebo and had a lovely evening with lots of fun reminiscing.  I don’t think we could ever be lucky enough to have neighbours like this again.

The fourth weekend we had a huge barbecue and invited friends, work colleagues and all the neighbours.  It was a busy day; the first guests arrived at 1:20 p.m. and the last left at about 10:30 p.m.  Our friendly butcher did a wonderful job with the burger, sausage and wing supplies.  Wrapped leftovers were taken the next day to the local soup kitchen.

The Thursday after this huge party we moved out and into our “cosy” apartment.  Cosy?  It’s nearly 6 p.m. and the temperature’s 81°F with humidity at 60%.  Perhaps I should have said sweaty.  And I’ve just done the ironing.  I must be mad.

We’ve booked flights to come to the UK again later this month and will be around the weekend of the International meeting.  Our plan is to be there so we hope to get to see most, if not all of you.

Until then, take care,

Heather

P.S.   From Peter

For the same reasons as outlined above absolutely nothing has been done to the car in the last few weeks.  Luckily the people to whom we sold the house offered to let us leave the car there and come to work on it as we wished. The plan is to get it into a moveable state without inconveniencing them unduly. Sounds like weekend work to me.
