Meeting Notes

In the absence of our leader (off on his holidays), deputy Ruth took the chair to address a fairly full meeting. Several people braved the inclement weather in their TRs or other Triumphs, two of them even arriving with tops down (foolhardy or brave?) Ruth welcomed us all, especially Duncan Jolly in his capacity as East Midlands Group Co-ordinator, and new member Mark Spence (more from him later). The meeting got under way with the normal helping of banter and heckling from the floor.

TR Sills for sale

Dick showed us a pair of inner sills he has for sale, (just avoiding knocking Pete’s head off with them in the process!) They are Heritage quality, from TRGB, and will fit a TR4, 5 or 6. Normal trade price is £30 each, plus VAT, but Dick is asking for £40 for the pair. He will then donate the proceeds to Marie Curie. If they are not sold before, they will be taken to the International, so contact Dick if you are interested. Sounds like a bargain, and a charity will benefit too. Thank you, Dick.

Visit to Laon in May

Colin and Ann, and Tim and Kathryn, took part in this historic vehicle rally, with 50 TRs there, as well as Spitfires and other Triumphs. On Sunday the streets in Laon are all blocked off for sole use of the historic cars, and it’s a great event to attend. We understand that Colin broke down with clutch trouble, but don’t have any details. However, I believe Tim and/or Colin have promised a report to come.

Norfolk weekend in June

12 people went, either camping or caravanning, and a good time was had by all. Roger must have taken the record for the most miles covered, as he did a little run-out of his own to Birmingham during the weekend.

Suffolk event

Graham and Maggie Ransome have offered to do a BBQ at their place on Saturday 7th July. Contact them if interested.

Ashby Folville June meeting

This was extremely busy with the usual mix of interesting cars to drool over. Several of our group went (Gunns, Faulkners, Reg, Paul, Andy H, Pete Garlick. John E – apologies if I’ve missed anyone), but some of us didn’t see anyone else there. Well, I did say it was busy. If you’ve never been, it’s always worth going because you never know what is going to be there.

Paul’s trip to Peru

Paul had a very successful trip, and (unusually) managed to arrive back in one piece with all his bones intact. He found the trek physically demanding, not least because of the high altitude which made breathing tricky. Apparently he survived on marmalade sandwiches whilst wearing a big floppy hat (or was that another story about Peru?) The terrain was very challenging, which meant it took 4 days to do the 26 miles, whilst carrying 8kg backpacks up steep climbs with very irregular steps. The long days started at 4 or 5 am, and didn’t finish until 6pm. It was well worth the effort though, as up to last Friday, the 33 people who went had managed to pay in a massive £160,000 to Marie Curie, with probably another £35,000 - £40,000 to come. What a fantastic result. A heartfelt round of applause after Paul’s report showed our admiration for his achievement. Well done, Paul. Once he has got his photos sorted, he is planning to organise another social event to tell us more about the trip.

TR Action Social Scene report

Dave was praised for writing yet another amusing report – thank you.

Members’ telephone list

This was circulated last month; an updated list will be published soon.

Sweet Charity

This was on recently at Loughborough Town Hall, and about a dozen of us were treated to a lovely evening. Tickets were organised by Rachael, who was taking part in the show, put on by local company Greasepaint. If you’ve never been to one of their shows, you have missed out. They are always highly entertaining, and very professionally done, although it is an amateur group. Their next show is Little Shop of Horrors, in October 2007. Rachael will be organising tickets again nearer the time.

Raid to Camb Followers

This happened recently, with 3 cars and 5 people being involved. According to Duncan, this doubled the size of their meeting!

TS2 at Stoney Cove

It was our turn to have TS2 on Wednesday 13th of June, as part of its tour of the country to mark Ian Evan’s retirement as chairman of the TR Register. Martin W and Reg arranged to take it to Stoney Cove Dive Centre for a photo-shoot with one of each type of TR. Despite poor weather, the evening was very successful with lots of our cars turning up for numerous photos, including lots of us in black shirts. Food was served at the pub/restaurant on site, and TS2 was duly snapped. It spent the night in Martin F’s garage (our poor 6 had to stay outside in the cold and rain all night – aaah!), and was handed over to Staffs and Warwicks group the next morning. Thanks to Martin W and Reg for making sure the evening went smoothly.

All the Cars

Come on, Mick. Get in the picture!

RAF Wittering family day – Friday 6th July

Mark Spence (potential new member with TR4A) works at Wittering, and is involved in organising the day for servicemen’s families. He says this regular event is a way for service personnel to show off the station and its facilities to their families. It also helps to maintain the support of families while servicemen and women are abroad, and ensure they feel included in Wittering’s work.

There will be involvement from Army and Royal Navy personnel too. Attendance at the event, which is not open to the public, is by special invitation only, and we are very privileged to have been asked to take part by displaying our cars. There will be many other attractions, including a flypast by the Red Arrows, Spitfires, Hurricanes, jets, helicopters, and many static displays including field gun demos. As it is a main base for Harriers, there are sure to be some of those to see too. Speaking as someone who has never been to a military base before, I think it will be really interesting to see some of their kit and displays close-up, not to mention the flying display. The local Bentley owners’ club will also be there.

I did check with Mark that cameras are allowed, so feel free to take photos. The day runs from 11am – 4pm, but we need to be there by 10am, and stay until the end. About 6 cars signed up at the meeting, but the more the better, so if you would like to go then please contact Sue Faulkner 01509 232902 by Saturday 30th June, so that I can pass details on to Mark. He needs to know names of everyone attending, who will be driving, and registration number, model, and colour of car. He needs this information well before the day, as he has to arrange passes for us all to get onto site. We also need to take ID on the day, such as a driving licence. He did say he could fit in latecomers at a pinch, but it would be much easier if we could give him all the info well ahead. By the way, it’s not just a boy’s day out, as a couple of ladies have already signed up! A list of the planned activities is given below.

International weekend 20 – 22 July

As usual there will be a large contingent of Leicester group folk going, including several ladies. Paul is kindly organising the Saturday evening BBQ, but needs to know what size pig to get. Rachael was taking names at the meeting, but if you weren’t there, then please let Paul know as soon as you can so he can get the right size. He was also taking numbers for a meal on Friday night, so again contact him if you would like to be included.

Lubenham Open Gardens 8th July

This will be on Sunday 8th July, and involves lots of gardens being open to view in the village. Margaret and John will be opening their lovely garden again, so contact them if you would like more details.

Kimbolton Castle Classic Car Run 15th July

This run is on Sunday 15th July. There is a £5 entry fee. Margaret and John are already booked in, so contact them if you would like to go too.

Other business

John M asked when nominations had to be made for the post of national chairman. Duncan thought it was 60 days before the November AGM, which prompted Ruth to ask if we had any volunteers. Chris Cunnington will be standing, there may also be other posts vacant.

Before he went to Peru, Paul had compiled a list of people who had recently ordered items of club clothing from him, then passed it on to the manufacturers who have since lost it. So if you are waiting for new togs, please contact Paul so he can pass on your order again.
